Livestock Production for Improved Nutrition (LPIN) Poster

Feed the Future Bangladesh Livestock Production for Improved Nutrition (LPIN)

The Livestock Production for Improved Nutrition (LPIN) project was implemented by the Society Development Committee (SDC) with support from USAID and ACDI-VOCA. Operating across Charbhadrasan and Sadarpur Upazilas in Faridpur, the initiative targeted 1,200 smallholder livestock farmers—predominantly women (83%) and youth (17%)—to transform traditional cattle rearing into sustainable, commercial enterprises.

Project Goal

Empowering smallholder farming households in Faridpur to bridge nutritional gaps and boost household incomes through climate-smart livestock management, tailored financial products with insurance, and direct high-value market linkages.

Project Objectives

  • Enhance Capacity & Household Nutrition: Introduce modern, climate-smart livestock management practices to boost farm productivity and eliminate household nutritional deficiencies among smallholder families.
  • Expand Inclusive Financial Services: Broaden access to tailored, farmer-centric financial literacy training along with loan products—bundled with veterinary support and insurance coverage—to facilitate enterprise growth and mitigate operational risks.
  • Strengthen Market Integration & Income: Connect smallholder livestock farmers directly to high-value commercial markets and premium buyers to secure fair prices, maximize household earnings, and elevate rural livelihoods.

1. Capacity Building & Support

  • Hands-on Training: Delivered comprehensive technical training to 1,200 smallholders on high-yield breed selection, hygienic housing, balanced feed formulation, and preventive healthcare.
  • Continuous Monitoring: Established robust follow-up protocols to ensure practical adoption at the household level.
  • Financial Literacy: Conducted cluster-level interactive workshops using visual aids to build enterprise management skills.

2. Tailored Finance & Risk

  • Innovative Credit: Launched a farmer-centric financial service featuring expanded credit ceilings to support business scaling.
  • Integrated Risk Shield: Bundled 24/7 veterinary support along with life insurance coverage for livestock assets and borrowers.
  • Financial Outreach: Disbursed a total of BDT 7.5 Crore in tailored livestock loans among 750 smallholder entrepreneurs.

3. High-Value Market Linkages

  • Direct Integration: Linked smallholder farmers directly with commercial markets and high-value buyers, eliminating predatory middle-tier brokers.
  • Maximizing Returns: Enabled farmers to command fair, premium prices for dairy output and fattened cattle, boosting household earnings and food security.
